Our industries have been facing skills shortages for many decades, but they remain a persistent and unsolved issue for our companies. Today, the need for new skills adapted to the twin transition has amplified this challenge. Due to this persistent skills gap, there are currently massive unfilled vacancies in Metal, Engineering and Technology-based companies (MET) companies across Europe. To improve competitiveness and help more people find jobs we need support for excellent vocational education and training and higher education that reflects company requirements and attracts more students. We also have to work for better guidance and greater mobility for students, apprentices, teachers and young professionals.
Moreover, workers with adequate STEM backgrounds and STEM professionals are crucial for the sustainability of the industries and for MET companies to move forward, remain competitive and successfully manage the twin transition.
Likewise, investing in upskilling and reskilling is essential for companies to continue to move forward and for workers to remain employable in a rapidly changing world of work. Thus, labour market-relevant training is a key success factor for MET industries.
