On 26 January 2023, Ceemet participated in the event organised by Bruegel on “up and ahead: skills for more resilient EU workforce”. Delphine Rudelli, Ceemet Director General presented the MET industries’ views according to the Ceemet position paper on “Tackling Labour & skills shortages in the MET Industries.”
Accompanied by Victor Negrescu (Vice-Chair, Committee on Culture and Education, European Parliament) and Glenda Quintini (Senior Economist, OECD), she explained the key role of EU employers associations that allow sharing of best practices in order to improve national education systems. Since 2005, each EU country did a reform on its apprenticeship system. However, it is important to go further, with the promotion of dual learning (theory and practice). Social partners are involved in facilitating education systems, often with the use of concrete solutions, to anticipate the future skills needs for workers and young people.
The event showed an increase in skills shortages, especially in industry. Despite the investment of companies in changing the image of our industries, and attracting people by communication campaigns; it’s still problematic to recruit young people. Along with the labour shortages which exist in all sectors, the digital and green transitions create a further need to find new skills and invest in upskilling and reskilling of workers.
